Police get mobile app to monitor CCTV cameras in city
After bringing many parts of the city under CCTV surveillance due to the relentless campaign by the City Police, the traffic police wing on Saturday launched an exclusive mobile phone application for police officers that will provide the details of these cameras across the city.

The application, called ‘CCTV Chennai City’, is linked to Google Maps, on which all the locations in the city where CCTV cameras have been fixed are pinned. “Using the application, the officers can find out how many cameras are present at a particular location,” said an officer. They can also search and choose the location they want to check if a particular area has got CCTV surveillance and the distance between each camera.
The android mobile application has been installed in mobile phones of traffic inspectors. The Deputy Commissioners (Traffic) of North, East, West and South will have the necessary permission to pin new CCTV camera locations in the maps and make changes in the existing data in their respective jurisdiction. Joint commissioners have also been given similar facility, while the Additional Commissioner (Traffic) and City Police Commissioner will monitor all the cameras.
With an intention to have at least one CCTV camera for every 50 metres on important roads in Chennai, the city traffic police wing have zeroed in on as many as 15,345 locations and 31,802 shops to install the cameras. Parts of Poonamallee High Road and Anna Salai have been brought under CCTV surveillance in the last few days. On Saturday, Commissioner AK Viswanathan inaugurated another 446 cameras covering Cathedral Road, Radhakrishnan Salai, TTK Road, Eldams Road, Kasthuri Rangan Road, Chamiers Road and Cenatoph Road.
Footage helps trace missing teen
The CCTV cameras installed on Anna Salai helped police trace within an hour a mentally-disturbed teen who went missing on Saturday.
Hariharan (16) had come to a sports showroom on Anna Salai in Teynampet with his parents, Dr Ganesan and Lakshmi. He went missing after
a while when he was cycling inside the premises. As Hariharan cannot speak properly, parents panicked and rushed to the Teynampet police station. The officers swung into action and shared his photo through WhatsApp groups.
They also checked the CCTV cameras, and found that the boy had gone towards TTK road. Following this, the police on patrol were alerted, who traced and rescued Hariharan. Hariharan’s parents broke into tears after seeing their missing son, said police personnel.
