The arrested officer was identified as traffic inspector RP Iyyappan, attached to the Valasaravakkam Traffic Enforcement.Â
The inspector had seized the bike of one T Thangadurai (33) of Saligramam, who works as the supervisor of a private firm engaged in drainage work. According to sources, inspector Iyyappan had seized Thangadurai’s bike, charging that the drainage work that is underway was blocking the traffic flow on the road. Sources said Iyyappan had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 8000 to release his bike.
However, unwilling to give the bribe, Thangadurai approached the DVAC and lodged a complaint against Iyyappan.
Based on his complaint, the sleuths set a trap to catch the traffic inspector red-handed. Accordingly, Thangadurai was given chemical laced notes to hand it over to the police officer on Friday. After the money was handed over, the sleuths in plainclothes arrested the inspector. The accused officer was lodged in prison after being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate cum special judge, Tiruvallur.
