    ‘Importance must be given to Mathematics and Statistics in Risk Management’

    The International Conference on Mathematical Computer Engineering (ICMCE2018) – a two-day event organised by the Mathematics Division, School of Advanced Sciences – was inaugurated at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) on November 23.

    The inaugural function was presided by Sankar Viswanathan, Vice President, VIT while Dr Kalyani Desikan, Convenor, ICMCE2018 welcomed the gathering. The chief guest for the inaugural function, Mahesh Rajaraman, Senior President and Country Head - Risk Management, YES Bank, Chennai stressed on the importance of Mathematics and Statistics in Risk Management and Data Analytics in his address. He also emphasized on the importance of communication skills and emotional intelligence for students entering the corporate world. 

    Kadhambari S Viswanathan, Assistant Vice President, VIT spoke about the role that Indian mathematicians has played since the time of Aryabhatta in her address. Dr VS Kanchana Bhaaskaran, Dean Academics, VIT, highlighted the intertwining of Mathematics and Computer Engineering in her address. 

    Dr Indra Rajasingh, Convenor, ICMCE2018 spoke about the dynamics of the conference and Dr C Vijayalakshmi, Co-convenor, ICMCE2018 proposed the vote of thanks.

    The international speakers at the conference included Dr Paul Manual, Kuwait University, Kuwait; Dr Ali Iranmanesh, Tarbiat Modares University, Iran; Dr Saeid Alikhani, Yazd University, Iran; Dr Chia Gek Ling, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia; Dr Bruce W Watson, Stellenbosch University, South Africa and Dr Rinovia Simanjuntak, Institut Teknologi, Indonesia. 

    The speakers from India included Dr Aparna Renjith, St Xavier’s College for Women, Kerala; Dr N Sadagopan, IITDM Chennai; Dr N Bhalaji, SSN College of Engineering, Chennai and Dr Sanjit Das, VIT. An international workshop on Optimization Algorithms, Graph Theory and Geometrical Flows in Modern Computing was organized as a part of the conference. Over 250 research papers were presented by participants from all over India. 

    This inter-disciplinary conference has given a platform for young and experienced researchers from abroad and India to share their knowledge and expertise.
