City gets smart: LPG to power 12 crematoriums

A senior official of the Corporation said 12 crematoriums will be upgraded. “The project is taken under Smart City Mission. The works have started in Kannamapet burial ground near T Nagar at a cost of Rs 2 crore,” the official said.
However, the civic body is yet to start works at the other 11 crematoriums. “We have identified the crematoriums. Tenders will be floated to convert the 11 crematoriums soon,” the official added.
Explaining the advantages of LPG crematoriums, the official said that the biomass gasifier crematoriums need wood to be burned and the electric crematoriums take more time to heat, whereas, the LPG crematoriums burns the body in lesser duration. The official also hinted that the LPG crematoriums would be run by Isha Foundation. Presently, the civic body maintains 22 gasifier burial grounds and eight electric burial grounds.
