According to sources, residents of 100-ft road in Kolathur noticed a girl standing alone and crying on Sunday and took her under their care. After they alerted the Rajamangalam police about the child, a woman approached the residents claiming to be her mother.

The residents handed over the child to the woman after some questioning, but soon, the police reached the spot and asked for the girl. When they were told that the child was handed over to the woman, the officers got angry and yelled at them which led to an altercation. One of the residents was drunk and went a little overboard in his verbal attack, after which he was made to get inside the patrol vehicle by force.

The residents, however, claimed that the police tried to take a photograph with the rescued girl to claim responsibility for the reuniting her with her mother and this led to the argument.

Meanwhile, an inspector from Rajamangalam, Mariappan, said that the police officers on the spot tried to question the residents since they claimed that they had handed over the girl to the mother. “If the child had gone into wrong hands, the problem will only escalate. When the police personnel wanted the residents, who rescued the girl to give it in writing, they picked up a fight with the officers,” theinspector said.

Sub-inspector Deepa attached to CMBT police station, who was seen manhandling a man in the video, said that she intervened in the scuffle when she was on her way home at SRB Nagar. “Since the people are from my area, I thought I can make peace. I had to use force since one ofthem tried to assault a woman officer attached to the Rajamangalam police station,” she said. She added that some of the men in the area are angry with her as she often scolded them for causing inconvenience to others aftergetting drunk.
