    Survivors, parents of accident victims share tales to discourage rash driving

    The city traffic police have, for the first time on Tuesday, conducted an awareness camp for young two-wheeler riders who were booked for rash and dangerous driving to stress on the importance of disciplined driving.

    The camp also saw victims of accidents involving rashly driven two-wheelers, parents of other victims and youngsters who have lost loved ones to such accidents, share their experience.


    “Our idea was to emphasise that people face physical and psychological problems after getting injured in accidents related to rash driving,” said M Sree Abhinav, the deputy commissioner of police, traffic (east), Chennai.


    One bike rider, identified as Mukesh, recounted how he lost his friend who was riding pillion with him before they met with an accident. Mukesh was speedingto avoid the police as he was neither wearing a helmetnor carrying his licence. “Even now ehen I thinkabout it, I feel depressed,”he said.


    Another rider, Divakar, explained how he met with an accident while driving rashly and broke his backbone and hurt his eyes. He told the group that even till date, he was struggling to carry out his daily routine.


    More than 50 youngsters and 15 parents of victims participated in the programme. “We plan to continue with such programmes for a few more weeks,” said a traffic police officer.
