UNICEF’s Children’s Day to be celebrated in Chennai today

Throughout India, Children’s Day is celebrated every year on November 14. However, November 20 marks another important occasion globally — UNICEF’s World Children’s Day that marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The occasion stands to raise awareness as well as funds for the millions of children who are unschooled, unprotected and uprooted.

This year, UNICEF has invited people worldwide to sign its global petition as well as ‘Go Blue’ for every child by doing or wearing something blue on Tuesday. Even the Rashtrapathi Bhavan, along with other institutions in the country has adhered to the theme #GoBlue to put up blue lights to pay tribute to the cause.

In Chennai, Arunodhaya Centre for Street and Working Children has joined hands with Thozhamai and UNICEF in listening to the voices of children on the topic of ‘Safe Schools -- Right of Every Child’. More than 200 children from government/aided schools will present their ideas on how educational institutions can be made safe spaces, from their perspective.

“We want to give their voices importance, and the main motive of this project is to ensure that every child goes to school. That is possible only if they consider the area as a safe space, and it’s important we listen to them,” said Dr Virgil D’Sami, Executive Director at Arunodhaya.

“We want to build a world where every child, including the disabled and the marginalised, is in school and learning, safe from harm, free from discrimination and able to fulfil their potential. It’s time to put children back on our development agenda,” added the organisers. The initiative will be kick-started at the TNSCB Hall, Tsunami Quarters Ennore at 10 am on Tuesday.

Dr Virgil added that a 100-meter handprint banner in support of child protection will be done during the programme. “We are hosting children from north Chennai, as they are part of the community that deals with such issues,” she added. “Eventually, we want all schools to set up special councils that can monitor the functioning of schools as safe spaces and address any complaints.”
