Based on a tip-off, the RPF personnel searched the Kakinada Port – Chengalpattu Circar Express immediately after it arrived at the platform number 5 at Egmore railway station around 7 am. Inside the general compartment, they found two unclaimed shopper bags. When checked, they found the eight bundles of ganja weighing 15 kg inside the bags.

“The suspects may have abandoned the baggage after they spotted police personnel examining the compartments,” said RPF Inspector General S Louis Amuthan. According to him, RPF personnel have arrested 17 people, including two women for smuggling the contraband and seized 187 kilograms from them so far this year. The seized ganja was procured from Annavaram and Tuni areas in Padagiri Hills located in East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. Several peddlers procure ganja from these areas, which are naxal affected, to earn easy money.

On Friday, the joint teams comprising sleuths from the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and Chennai city police conducted a massive, surprise drive against peddlers, especially in north Chennai and suburbs, as the ganja harvest season has begun.
