Such was the panic over the search that the officials did not have enough time to stash the money, which was found strewn on the floor and even from garbage bins, sources said.

The DVAC team landed at the premise in the afternoon and started the searches which went on till midnight. The operation was initiated after the anti-corruption watchdog received a host of complaints alleging corruption by officials of the directorate, sources added.

During the raid, the team asked all officials to remain in the office till they completed search. They also examined all the documents and personal registers of belonging to some of the officials.

This is the latest in a series of raids at several government offices that the DVAC has conducted in the recent past during the days prior to Deepavali. These raids had resulted in the seizure of substantial amount of cash from different offices that received a large quantity of Deepavali gifts and cash.

Simultaneous DVAC raids were carried out at offices belonging to Transport, Police, Registration and Revenue departments and also Tasmac offices. According to a DVAC report, the agency conducted several rounds of searches based on tip-offs and confidential information.
