According to Chennai Corporation officials, the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) would soon appoint a consultant to prepare a feasibility report, detailed project report (DPR) and estimation for the new bridge. The agency has floated a Request for Proposal (RFP) tender for appointing the consultant.

“The bridge will be built along or over Virugambakkam Canal from Natesan Nagar West to Kaliamman Koil Street to reach Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Poonamallee High Road. The bridge would pass through Koyambedu Market,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

The official also said that the construction of the new bridge would start after the feasibility report and DPR are prepared.

“The consultant should conduct survey on all the aspects such as pedestrian and vehicular movement and prepare the DPR by factoring in the developments that could happen 20 years into the future,” the official said.

The bids are scheduled to be opened on November 12 and the selected consultant should complete the feasibility report, DPR, estimation and impact report within five months from the date of award of the work order, said the official.

Although the total length and design of the bridge would be based on the detailed project report, a Chennai Corporation official hinted that the approximate length of the bridge would be 2 km.

Meanwhile, the Highways Department is constructing a new 1.5 kilometer bridge near the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Bus Stand (CMBT) at a cost of Rs. 93.50 crore.
