Rs 2 crore Amma Ecological Park to come up at Tondiarpet in one month

“Almost all the works like construction and structural works have been completed. Now greenery works are underway, which will be completed within a month,” an official from the Park Department of the Chennai Corporation said.

The new ecological park is being built on CB Road in Tondiarpet. Meanwhile, the civic body has also undertaken works for another Amma Ecological Park on the same road. The two ecological parks are being constructed at Rs 2 crore and Rs 8 crore respectively.

According to the official, the eco-parks would have herbal gardens where the visitors could learn about the uses and medicinal values of the herbs. “Apart from herbal gardens, the parks will also have granite walkways instead of concrete ones. Open-air theatre, fountain plaza and bio-toilets, too, will come up in the parks,” the official added.

Among the visitors to the park, children would be educated on the importance of eco-system and protection of endangered species. For this purpose, the parks would have placards and statues of endangered birds. Artificial mountain falls would add ecological appeal to the park.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has floated a separate tender to construct a sewage treatment plant inside one of the two parks. “Groundwater in the locality is salty, so we are using tanker water for the construction works. A separate portion is earmarked for the sewage treatment plant. Once the plant becomes functional, the sewage water from nearby Buckingham Canal will be drawn to recycle. Plants will grow faster in recycled water,” the official explained.

The civic body has been using recycled water for watering Natesan Park, Jeeva Park, CIT Nagar park and Kodambakkam park. Sewage treatment plants are built with Smart City Funds in those parks.

It is also learnt that the civic body has recently floated tenders to construct eco pavilion inside Anna Nagar Tower Park, where photos and awareness video clips on nature would be screened.
