A group of students reached the suburban terminal in the afternoon and tried to tie a banner in front of the motorman’s cabin of an Arakkonam-bound Electric Multiple Unit (EMU).

The banner said, anbu (love), arajagam (mayhem) and vettu-kuthu (attack with weapons) on the top, with Pachaiyappa’s College in bold letters and Ayudha Pooja wishes in middle. It also read ‘Boys are back’ with a picture of a machete laid above the text. After being alerted about the nuisance created by the students, railway police rushed to the spot and secured 15 of them.

After the inquiry, police said they were students of Pachaiyappa’s College hailing from Arakkonam and Tiruvallur, who wanted to celebrate Ayudha Pooja on the train. Police booked all of them under various. However, considering the future of the students, police did not remand them and released them on self-bail, said an officer. The college administration has also been informed about the students’ behaviour.

While college students commuting by train on Chennai Central- Sullerpetta route kept a low profile after series of arrests for indulging in violence, Thursday’s incident triggered another round of panic among the commuters.
