Restoring the glory of palm trees locally

For the past couple of years, palm trees, the state tree of Tamil Nadu, are being cut down due to various reasons. This has resulted in reducing the groundwater and creating an imbalance in the ecosystem. Not many know that we could use all parts of a palm tree for various purposes.

In order to spread awareness about the importance of palm trees, Ainthinai, a part of Chennai Trekking Club's green initiative, is organising night camping and palm seed sowing at Avadi on October 27.

“Once, people used to make various products from palm trees. It was a big industry that provided job opportunities to many villagers. The branches were used to create a shelter, firewood; trunks were used as a support for the houses, and to make pana vellam, nungu, pathaneer, etc. In ancient days, palm leaves were used to spread Tamil literature by copying and scripting the poems, songs and stories. Moreover, a palm tree is one of the high drought-resistant trees which can be grown in water scarcity places. Also, it doesn't require a constant maintenance,” says one of the  Ainthinai members.

The main objective of the upcoming event is to sow 5,000 plus palm seeds at the bunds of Pandeswarem Lake in Avadi. If you want to participate, contact 97910 95010 for details.
