Woman killed in fight over eve-teasing
A 40-year-old woman was stabbed to death and another woman suffered severe injuries following a quarrel that erupted between two neighbouring families over alleged eve-teasing of a 16-year-old girl in Royapuram on Friday night.
Chennai
The deceased person was identified as Mary, a relative of the girl. The injured persons, Melina, another relative, and Premkumar, the girl’s father, were admitted to a hospital.Â
According to the police, Vinothkumar (26) of Chetti Thottam teased the 16-year-old daughter of Premkumar. Immediately after, the girl’s mother Parameshwari lodged a complaint at the Royapuram police station. The police called Vinothkumar to the station but let him off with a warning.Â
After the girl’s father Premkumar came to know about the incident when he returned from work, he confronted Vinothkumar at his house. This led to a fisticuff, in which Vinothkumar, his brother Tamizh (23) and a relative Sankar (28) of Chetti Thottam attacked Premkumar.
On hearing about the attack, Premkumar’s kin Mary rushed to the spot and reprimanded the three youngsters. In a fit of rage, Vinothkumar stabbed Mary with a kitchen knife. Melina and Premkumar, who came to her rescue, also suffered injuries in the attack.Â
Shocked over the incident, the neighbours informed police and handed over the three men to them. The accused persons, Vinothkumar, his brother Thamizh and relative Sankar of Chetti Thottam, were remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. Mary’s body was sent to Stanley Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.Â
Royapuram Inspector Raja Robert was reportedly suspended for not registering a case when Parameshwari lodged an eve-teasing complaint against Vinothkumar.
