    Elderly man hurt fighting bike-borne snatchers

    A 66-year-old man suffered injuries after being dragged on the road by two bike-borne mobile phone snatchers when he tried to chase and stop their vehicle in Valasaravakkam on Sunday.

    The victim, B Jayapandian of Mettukuppam in Nerkundram, was treated at a private hospital and is out of danger. While snatching cases have come to become common in the city, it was the CCTV footage retrieved from the locality that showed how horrifying the incident was.

    The incident happened at 3.30 pm at Majestic Colony when Jayapandian stepped out of his relative’s house. When he was about to start his two-wheeler, two men on a two-wheeler approached him on the pretext of seeking directions to an address.

    When he was explaining them the route, the pillion rider suddenly took Jayapandian’s mobile phone from his shirt pocket. As the men tried to flee, Jayapandian chased them and caught hold of the bike’s rear part. However, the reckless snatchers sped away, dragging Jayapandian on the road. Finally, the elderly man lost balance and fell on the road. Passers-by rescued him and took him to a private hospital.

    Based on his complaint, the Valasaravakkam police registered a complaint and said that they have identified the snatchers with the help of the CCTV footage. Another video recovered from the nearby street showed three persons on a bike, and police believe that the duo was among them. Valasaravakkam Assistant Commissioner B Sampath said that the trio would be nabbed overnight. 

    Pedestrian robbed of mobile phone in Kodambakkam

    A 25-year-old private firm employee was robbed of his mobile phone in Kodambakkam on Monday. The victim, C Jayakumar (25) of West Mambalam was returning from work to board a train at Kodambakkam railway station when a bike-borne duo snatched his mobile phone. Kodambakkam police have registered a case and investigating.

    Meanwhile, the Teynampet police arrested a mobile phone snatcher within hours after theyreceived a complaint from the victim. The stolen mobile phone was recovered from S Akash (21) of Chetpet handed over the phone to its owner R Rajesh (51) of T Nagar. The snatching took place near Vidyodhaya school on Monday.
