Women’s Christian College drama club helps students discover their talents

A third-year student of Department of English, Amanda Maria Rachel, is the present co-ordinator. She says, “Our club is one of the prominent theatre clubs in Chennai’s college circuit. Apart from our own theatre fests, we have been participating in culturals outside the campus as well. A few members are also part of city-based theatre clubs.”

According to her, the theatre has been an influential factor in many students’ lives. “We empower students to be outspoken, to self-express and showcase their creativity. Many students have told us how theatre helped them excel in academics. Not just acting, the club explores theatre in all its nuances — students will get to know the technical aspects like lighting, designs, costume, make-up, stage management, etc.”

Once in a while, Dramatically Correct organises workshops where they invite experts from various fields. “We have divided the club into five technical groups so that students who excel in each department can focus on that particular segment. Students who are not part of the club also opt to help as backstage crew. The club members meet twice a month where we discuss our upcoming shows. Teachers and college management are supportive,” says Amanda. 

The club also conducts open mic where teachers can also participate. Their upcoming play Jinxed, directed by Sanjana Parthasarathy, will be staged on October 13 (4 pm and 7 pm) at Chettinad Harishree Vidyashram.
