A day after a 27-year-old woman from Velachery claimed that her 35-day-old son was abducted, the police on Sunday arrested her for murdering the infant by throwing him into the Velachery lake. She killed her son as she reportedly developed unbearable pain during breastfeeding him.

Police said that the accused Uma (27) and her husband Venkanna (30) are natives of Andhra Pradesh. Venkanna was employed at a super market in Phoenix Market City, while the woman was working at a clothing store in the same mall. Both fell in love and married two years ago and were living in a rented house in Velachery.

Police said that Uma had given birth to the baby boy, Charvik, on August 30. On Saturday, the couple had lodged a complaint at the Velachery police station, claiming that their son, who was sleeping inside the house, went missing. Uma told the police that they had kept the window open for ventilation and someone could have abducted

    the baby.

As the police were searching for the baby, the suspicion turned towards Uma after she made contradictory statements. Police also conducted inquires with the neighbours and one of them told the investigators that they saw a woman in nighty carrying a child on her shoulders at 4 am on Saturday.

When the Uma was further grilled by a team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Adyar Sashank Sai and Velachery inspector E Velu, she confessed to killing the child as she was not able to bear the pain during breastfeeding. She also told the police that her husband and her mother, failed to get her medication for the pain.

They reportedly told her that the pain is part of the motherhood. She even asked her husband if they could hand over the child to her mother for taking care and Venkanna refused, said the police.

“So, she decided to kill the child. She took the infant, wrapped in a plastic carry bag and threw him in the Velachery lake,” the police said. The body of the baby was fished out later on Sunday.
