Corporation floats tenders for new bridges across Puzhal surplus canal
Residents of Manali and other parts of North Chennai will soon have a respite from traffic snarls while crossing the Puzhal surplus canal as the Greater Chennai Corporation has floated tenders to build bridges at three locations.
Chennai
According to a Corporation official, the bridges would be constructed in Amullavoyal, Vadaperumbakkam and Burma Nagar at a cost of around Rs 44 crore. “Detailed project reports (DPR) for the three bridges were prepared and based on the DPRs, tenders are invited,” the official said.
Explaining the need for the facility, the official added that old bridges in Vadaperumbakkam and Amullavoyal were severely damaged during the 2015 deluge, while the Burma Nagar bridge is choked due to heavy traffic.
“Existing service roads in Vadaperumbakkam and Amullavoyal are constructed at water level. Due to this, traffic movement would be affected during floods,” the official said. The canal is a major drain in North Chennai carrying surplus water from the Puzhal Lake and drains into the Kosasthalaiyar River.
The new bridge at Amullavoyal would connect Andarkuppan-Redhills Road to the 100 feet Road (Manali Expressway), while the bridge at Vadaperumbakkam would connect Madhavaram-Redhills Road and Puzhal Union Road. The New Burma Nagar bridge will replace the old bridge. It may be noted that the three bridges were announced in the State assembly in June. “The construction works will begin after suitable bidder is selected,” the official added.
