Airport parking rates cut, no greenfield airport for now
In a relief for air passengers, car parking rates will be significantly reduced at the Chennai airport to approximately one-third of the present rates.
Chennai
Chennai Airport director Chandramouli said on Friday that the decision was taken after they received a lot of complaints from the people using the airport car parking facility.
“Car parking rates will be reduced on a par with the airport in Kolkata and other cities and will be slashed to Rs 50/- for 0-30 minutes and an additional Rs 40 for parking up to two hours.” Chandramouli said at a press meet held here.
The current rates for car parking include Rs 150 and Rs 160 up to two hours for private and commercial vehicles respectively. The exact date of implementation of new rates will be announced soon.
Regarding the proposal for a greenfield airport in Sriperumbudur, the airport director said that the proposal had been dropped as adequate land was not provided by the state government. “As of now, there are no plans to construct a greenfield airport in Chennai,” he said.
A few years ago, AAI came out with a plan to construct a second airport in the outskirts of the city but could not go ahead with the project due to land acquisition issues. AAI officials added that since the greenfield airport proposal had been dropped, the modernization of the existing airport had been taken up on a priority basis.
