Transport department to set up 7K Road Safety Clubs for school students
The Transport Department will be setting up 7,000 Road Safety Clubs across the state to reduce the number of road accidents and related deaths.
Chennai
The clubs will be set up in government and government-aided academic institutions, educating the students about road safety. Those from Classes 6 to 9 are eligible to register in these clubs at their schools.
Transport Commissioner C Samayamoorthy said, “We have taken a slew of measures to reduce the number of accidents and related deaths in the state. The students interested in the initiative will be provided with an option to choose the club in their schools.”
The plan is designed along the lines of existing clubs, including NSS and NCC, in the schools. “The safety club will be available as an elective to be opted under the co-curricular activities,” the commissioner said.
The club members will be taught how to ride safely, emergency care, first-aid, and about the golden hour, among others. The authorities are also planning to teach students about conducting road safety audits under this initiative.
