Singapore technology brought in for T Nagar multi-level car parking
To speed up the work on the multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility in T Nagar, the Greater Chennai Corporation has imported a technology from Singapore to construct the basement of the structure.
Chennai
According to a Chennai Corporation engineer, the machine and metal sheets to construct shoring structure have been brought from Singapore. “The basement will be constructed at a depth of eight meter. To avoid the accidents while digging, shoring arrangements should be made. The works have started last week at a cost of Rs 4 crores,” the engineer said.
Shoring is the construction of a temporary structure to support an unsafe structure. In the case of the parking facility, engineers fear that the constant vibrations could become fatal for the workers and the structure, as the site is located on busy the Thiyagaraya Road. “Shoring structure will hold the soil from falling on workers while they are digging,” the engineer said.
Explaining the technical prowess of the machine, the official said the machine would send 12-meter-long metal shoring sheets underground in two minutes. In the old method, it is mostly done using wooden planks, which is time-consuming and less effective.
As the shoring sheets are stored in Chennai Port and bringing the huge metal sheets to the site takes more time, the Corporation has asked the contractor to complete the shoring works before the start of October. As per the plan, the multi-level car parking would accommodate nearly 550 two-wheelers and 250 cars.
