Corporation, CREDAI signs MoU to restore 10 tanks

Speaking on the MoU, Raj Cherubal, Chief Executive Officer of the Chennai Smart City Ltd, said that the civic body has covered 100 waterbodies, which is the halfway mark in the restoration efforts, within a span of a year. “We seek the help of other socially responsible organisations and citizens to support the effort of maintaining water bodies,” he added.

Under the MoU, CREDAI would restore Arraa Kulam, Ayyankulam and Vairavan Kulam in Ambattur; Mayttukuppam Ganga Nagar Pond and Appadurai Pillai street pond in Valasaravakkam; Aalavancherry Kulam in Alandur; Mandapamkuttai and Amara pond in Perungudi; and Thallikulam and Saraya Kulam in Sholinganallur. The city-based NGO, Chennai City Connect, would coordinate the efforts.

“Restoration of water bodies is an essential first step towards ensuring supply of fresh water not only for today but for the future as well. CREDAI has been campaigning for water conservation and green buildings across the country,” WS Habib, president, CREDAI Chennai, said.

There are 210 water bodies that are under the management of Corporation. The stormwater drain department of Corporation has taken up the restoration of these water bodies and is currently executing it under the Smart City programme.
