3-month campaign to beautify Adyar River
With World Rivers Day coming up on September 30, the Reciprocity Foundation in Chennai has launched an initiative to aid in the cleaning up of the iconic Adyar river in the city. Titled START – Save the Adyar River Today – the project aims to create solidarity and consensus for action among the various stakeholder groups, including the government, NGOs, the public, and so on.

Kicking off with a concert by legendary Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri at 6 am near the river, the occasion will be followed by a clean-up session and the start of their three-month-long campaign.
“We are an NGO that focuses on sustainability and waste management. This year, our focus is on restoring the Adyar river to its original beauty and aiding the government in the process. World Rivers Day was an ideal date to start the project, that will go on until January,” explained Mrinalini Siddhartha, who occupies the role of Programme Catalyst at the organisation.
Having teamed up with the Environmental Foundation of India (EFI), Reciprocity Foundation plans to conduct a series of events over the course of the next couple of months. “There are cyclothon, marathons, other events planned all around the theme of water and restoring the water bodies. It is just a small stretch of the river that we are focusing on, but we hope to bring an atmosphere of edutainment around the START initiative. The government has already started its seven-year plan to beautify the river, and we hope to supplement it suitably,” Mrinalini added.
