Chennai
Police said the student, S Shahal Kormath (23), a native of Palakkad in Kerala, may have taken the extreme step owing to family dispute, but added that a detailed probe was on. No suicide note was found from his room, police added.
A final-year dual degree student (five-year course), he was pursuing Ocean Engineering and was staying at Jamuna Hostel in the campus.
As he failed to come out of the room on Saturday morning, his fellow hostel mates informed the police, who broke opened the door and found Shahal hanging from the ceiling fan. His family members have been informed. The body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Kotturpuram police have registered a case.
Meanwhile, the institute mourned the student’s death as an “irreparable loss”. “This is indeed an irreparable loss to not just the institute and the family, but society as a whole. May his soul rest in peace,” it said in a statement, adding that it was cooperating with the authorities on the matter.
