Activists plan to meet CJ for disabled-friendly facilities in High Court

Members of Vidya Sagar and the December Three Movement are planning to meet the Chief Justice at the Madras High Court to discuss the lack of disabled-friendly toilets and other facilities in the premises. The move comes following a wheel-chair bound doctor was on Tuesday forced to urinate in a water bottle as he failed to locate a disabled-friendly toilet.

Staff at the court said that new toilets cannot be built owing to the fact that it is a heritage structure, said Muruganantham L, a Public Interest Litigant on Disability Rights, who had gone to the court for his case when the incident took place.

“The staff said that they will try to accommodate disabled-friendly facilities within the existing toilet. They claim that they are working on a plan to ensure we are comfortable,” he added.

Stating that the court should be made to understand the requirements of different persons with disabilities, Professor T M N Deepak of the December Three Movement said, “It is sad that we have to wait for an issue like this to expect any kind of change. We are trying to meet the Chief Justice in this regard and are hoping to get an appointment soon.”
