University of Madras invites applications for arts and science colleges
As the demand for courses other than engineering has increased in Tamil Nadu, the University of Madras has invited educational agencies for starting new Arts and Science Colleges in the city for the academic year 2019-2020.

The University also requested the existing colleges to start new courses and additional sections during the next academic year. University of Madras Registrar R Srinivasan said that institution which is interested in starting MCA and MBA courses are also invited to get enrolled.
At present there are 2.78 lakh students studying in university’s 133 affiliated colleges and 53 affiliated institutions of which 23 are autonomous colleges. Currently, the university has six campuses in Chennai at Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Chetpet and Maduravoyal (field lab).
Accordingly, the invited institutions should have adequate financial resources to provide laboratories, library, physical education and medical care to run a decent college.
Educational agencies should create endowment as per the norms laid down for starting a new college and an additional endowment at the rates prescribed by the university for introduction of new courses.
New educational institutions should also ensure that minimum 10 high schools should be available within a radius of 15 km from the proposed college. The minimum land requirement for academic purpose as per the university should be in a contiguous stretch.
The University of Madras has prescribed 41 courses for BSc degree in the new colleges. Similarly, a total of 35 courses have been recommended for Arts courses. Likewise, 13 for Bachelors in Commerce courses.
A senior staff from University of Madras said a committee has been formed to scrutinise the applications, which will be received before October 31 this year. He said that the committee member would go on a field visit to check the facilities available for students.
“Once the requirements are found to be in line with the norms, new college will be allowed to function from next academic year,” the official added.
