Rain brings down temperature in Chennai, TN expects showers for 2 days

The Regional Meteorological Centre forecast that heavy showers or rains accompanied with thunderstorm is likely to continue for the next 48 hours at the isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. For Chennai city, the sky condition would be generally cloudy. Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in some areas.'

Public were reeling under searing heat over the last few days and the situation on Sunday was no different as the sun beat down hard. However, in the evening, the skies turned grey and soon heavy rains pounded the city and suburbs. The impact of the showers was such that the mercury level, which was nearing 37.3 degrees Celsius in the noon, significantly dropped to 24.3 degree Celsius within an hour.

Traffic snarls were witnessed across the city as the surprise showers aligned with the Ganesh idol immersion procession across the city. Attributing the rain to convective activity, Meterological office sources said about 8 mm of rain was recorded till 4 pm.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation lies over North Coastal  Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level and a trough runs from this circulation to North Tamil Nadu at the same level, the sources said.

Meanwhile, weather blogger Pradeep John posted on his twitter account, “Tonight/tomorrow (Sunday night/Monday) early morning in all probability, rains can’t miss Chennai. Parts of south Chennai got rains on Saturday. The wind alignment is too perfect for rains to lash Chennai today (Sunday). Meanwhile, a rare September cyclone is in the making in the Bay of Bengal, after 2005. It will move towards NAP and South Odisha Coast.”

“Massive ground strikes, high intensity rains and mini vardah going on here non-stop for last 30 minutes in Anna Nagar. Many trees have fallen here. Don’t stand near the trees,” he said in a tweet. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 37 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively.
