In this street, the Corporation had found out that a few houses and shops had encroached upon the street, which is 8 meters wide and 180 meters long. This was making it tough for the vehicles to pass by, said an official statement from the civic body.

Though the encroachment has been identified in 2012, the persons concerned refused to vacate and had approached the Madras High Court. On August 8, the Madras High Court passed a judgement favouring the city Corporation and had directed for the removal of the encroachment in the public street.

Following this judgement, the Corporation, aided by the Greater Chennai Police, removed the encroaching structures. Now, the street has been made available for public use, added the release.

Merely a week ago, similar encroachment removal was carried out in Ambattur, where an engineering outfit was removed following a long-drawn court battle.

Corporation officials said that the regular, small scale encroachments are being removed by the zonal offices, but for the large-scale offenders, who often approach the court, the civic body has to wait till the judgement rules in their favour, added an official.

In addition, the Corporation has also recently removed auto repair shops encroaching the Cooum river, under the river restoration project, carried out by the nodal agency, Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT).
