The showers that cooled the city last month are a distant memory, as Chennai recorded the second highest temperature for the month of September on Wednesday. The 38 degree Celsius that was recorded on the day was only 0.7 degree less than the decadal high that was registered in September 2009.

The city has been experiencing a harsh weather since the beginning of this month, when the days and even nights were hot and sultry. In the last week alone, the weather stations in Chennai recorded a temperature of 36 degree Celsius, 35 degree Celsius and 36 degree Celsius on September 9, 10 and 11.
According to the data available with the Regional Meteorological Center, maximum temperature recorded in September 2017 was only 36.2 degree Celsius, while it was 36.6 degree Celsius in 2016 and 36.9 degree Celsius in 2015.
“The month of September is always marked with alternative hot days and pleasant days. We are experiencing hot temperature in the recent days because non favorable alignment of winds. The winds will be favorable in the coming days,” said city-based weather blogger Pradeep John.
He said a low-pressure area would be formed in Bay of Bengal, bringing rains to the coastal areas. “The interior districts including Vellore, Kancheepuram and Dharmapuri are receiving rains in the past 10 days. Now, the winds are now restricted in the outskirts where they experience cool evenings due to the occasional rains. This condition can be expected in the city in a couple of days.”
