Government issued Jaya’s health bulletins, informs IAS officer

Even though all the press releases put out during the period of former CM Jayalalithaa’s hospitalisation were on the Apollo Hospitals letterhead and signed off by its Chief Operating Officer (COO) Subbiah Viswanathan, it has been stated that the bulletins were released through the State Government’s Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) and not directly through the hospital.

This is said to have come to light during the deposition of IAS officer Ramalingam, who served as Secretary IV during Jayalalithaa’s tenure as Chief Minister, before the Justice Arumugasamy commission on Monday.

Appearing before the commission recently, Viswanathan was questioned as to why there were discrepancies between the bulletins that were released to the public and the official discharge summary issued after Jayalalithaa’s demise. The commission also sought to know as to which version was factually accurate, given that his signature was present on all bulletins.

In the backdrop of this, IAS officer Ramalingam was sent summons to reappear before the commission. Upon being questioned on Monday, Ramalingam is said to have told the commission that all the bulletins that were issued came through the DIPR and not through Apollo Hospitals.

This was revealed to media persons by the lawyer of Apollo Hospitals. The lawyer added that further enquiry may be required to ascertain whether the bulletins matched with the findings of the hospital.

Meanwhile, Apollo Hospitals cardiologist Sai Sathish and Head Physiotherapist Raj Prasanna also deposed before the commission on Monday.

Jayalalithaa spent 75 days at the hospital following her admission on September 22, 2016 after taking ill at her residence in Poes Garden. She passed away on December 5, 2016. The commission is set to submit its final report on October 24 this year.
