Jayaramiah speaks to Dr Ponnumbala Namasivayam at Stanley Medical College and Hospital

Jayaramiah was brought to the Emergency Department at the Stanley Medical College and Hospital after he experienced severe abdominal pain, vomited blood and had black tarry excretion. The doctors diagnosed him with aortic aneurysm which is an abnormal bulge that occurs in the wall of the major blood vessel that supplies blood from the heart to the rest of the body. They conducted a rare and risky procedure, following which Jayaramiah recovered.

Speaking about the case, the dean, Dr Ponnumbala Namasivayam, said that Jayaramiah had a low pulse and blood pressure, and was clinically in shock when he was admitted to the hospital. “As he had lost a lot of blood, he was initially given six units of blood, then resuscitated and stabilised. During further investigation, his diagnosis showed symptoms of aortic aneurysm.”

The condition requires immediate evaluation in the form of a CT scan and swift management by emergency surgery. “Any delay in administering the treatment could have been extremely dangerous for the patient,” said Dr Namasivayam.
