Southern Railways said that a fault in the junction box on the rail track near Chengalpattu railway station was noticed around 6 am on Monday. As a result, the express trains that were coming towards Chennai from southern districts were made to stop in between.

The cascading effect was felt on the schedule of other trains as well. The train running on Tirumalpur-Beach and Chengalpattu-Beach EMU sections were affected due to this. Later, around 7 am, the junction box was repaired by railway engineers.

Finally, one by one, the trains began running, and the services returned to normalcy after 8.30 am. However, by then the passengers who were about to board the EMUs to reach their colleges and offices had their routine disrupted due to this. Passengers alleged that signal failures have come to become a routine trouble on the Chengalpattu route.
