Looted jewellery back at victim’s doorstep
Almost a week after an unidentified person fled with 70 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a house in Perambur, the missing items mysteriously reappeared in front of the same house, the police said on Sunday. The cops also believe that the suspect could be someone known to the family.
Chennai
Imthiya Aboobacker, 40, a resident of Chinnasamy Street, lives with her children in the house while her husband is employed overseas.
On August 26, Imthiya stepped out of the house with her kids and returned at 10:30 pm. Upon her return, she was horrified to discover the lock to her house broken and her home in complete disarray. She also discovered that her jewellery was missing. Imthiya later lodged a complaint with the Sembium police station.
The police said that Imthiya’s mother Jameela, 71, found the bag of jewellery in front of the house on Saturday. The family told the police that the entire loot was returned by the thief. “It is possible that someone from the family was involved. Fearing arrest, the suspect returned the ornaments,” an officer said.
It may be recalled that a similar incident was reported from Vyasarpadi a month ago. Two days after a house of an EB official was burgled and 58 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 2 lakh stolen, the thief returned the loot following police investigation. Even then the police had suspected the involvement of insiders. The thief was later revealed to be a close relative of the family, who was later arrested.
