A 16-year-old pillion rider died after he was thrown off the Chromepet MIT flyover while his friend, also a minor, suffered grievous injuries after their motorbike crashed into the parapet on Friday morning. While checking the vehicle as part of their investigation, the police also recovered 250 grams of ganja.

The boys, who are not old enough to obtain a driving licence, did not wear helmets, when they were travelling on a yet-to-be registered two-wheeler that was bought by the rider’s father only a few days ago.

The deceased hailed from Hasthinapuram and was working in an electrical shop in Chromepet. The injured youth (16) who was riding the bike is a first-year ITI student from the same locality.

Police said that duo went for a ride on Friday morning on the new bike. They were speeding on the two-wheeler, and were not wearing helmets. “The boys were returning home in Hasthinapuram from Tambaram and took the bridge where the rider lost control of the bike and hit the wall of the flyover,” the police said.

In the impact, the pillion rider, who was thrown off the flyover, landed on the road below. Falling from a height of approximately 40 feet, he suffered grievous head injuries and died on the spot.

Chromepet police admitted the injured boy to a private hospital nearby, while his friend’s body was sent to Chromepet Government Hospital for autopsy. When police checked the two-wheeler, they found 250 grams of ganja concealed in it.

The deceased boy had to drop out after Class 8 due to financial constraints as his father abandoned the family. His elder brother works in a petrol bunk, said a relative of the deceased at Chromepet GH.

Chromepet traffic police have registered a case and are enquiring the rider’s father, who is also the owner of the bike.

Meanwhile, the Chromepet law and order police are investigating how the boys got the ganja.
