Powertrain or drivetrain is a system in a motor vehicles technology which connects the transmission to the drive axles.

Vehicle manufacturers are increasingly focussing on seamless integration of artificial intelligence, especially with the advent of IOT or Internet of Things Technology.  The risk factors and the security threats are also on a high spiral with automobiles too imbibing IOT technologies, sources say.

Continental, the technology company to join IIT-M for research, takes into account security features right from component development. It addresses the requirements of designs and architecture, sources say.

The company’s joint research with IIT Madras addresses an industry white spot - cybersecurity for conventional drivetrains. The research will focus on intrusion detection and reporting on powertrain applications.

Fast-paced evolution of mobility technologies also demand higher computational power, researchers say. Drivetrains are no longer all-mechanical systems. With high computing platforms, car manufacturers will be able to compete on various innovative functions, sources say.
