As part of the ongoing drive to create awareness on the importance of CCTV surveillance, spearheaded by City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan, police officers held a review meeting with representatives of various banks and non-banking financial institutions at the Commissioner’s office on Friday. The meeting, which was chaired by newly appointed Additional Commissioners, Mahesh Kumar Agarwal and R Dinakaran, discussed ways to prevent crimes in and around bank premises to make sure that the employees, customers and money in the bank were safe.

“Banks and other non-banking financial institutions assume significance, as they handle valuables of the public. Apart from installing CCTV cameras in bank premises, we have also invited them to contribute towards installing cameras in public places for better surveillance through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. As an exchange, we have offered to provide them technical consultation on the CCTV technology. Bank officials themselves cited instances of how CCTV footages have helped to solve crimes. While they are already aware, it would be expanded further with our insistence,” Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, Additional Commissioner (South), told DT Next.

With the number of crimes involving financial institutions are on the rise, police officers are of the view that strict security measures would curb such incidents in future.

    Safety measures

    • The entire premises, particularly entrance and the centre point of the bank, should be brought under CCTV surveillance with quality cameras and substantial backup facility
    • Security guards deployed at banks should be below 60 years with clear vision and physical agility. They also should be provided with mobile phones, necessary weapons and remain under the supervision of bank officials
    • Overleaf of bank challans should carry awareness messages on various kinds of frauds and cheating
    • Bank officials should meet the respective police inspectors every month to discuss the security measures. Emergency contact numbers, including that of police station, should be visibly pasted inside the banks
    • All the banks should be under supervision of nodal officers
