Vishakaha panel begins probe into allegations against senior cop
The Vishakha Committee that was re-constituted in the State Police department officially began probe into allegations of sexual harassment raised by a woman superintendent against her superior, an Inspector General, on Thursday.
Chennai
The committee, led by ADGP Seema Agarwal with ADGP S Arunachalam, DIG PC Thenmozhi, retired additional SP Saraswathi and senior administrative officer Ramesh from the office of DGP as members, met at the office of State Crime Records Bureau at Foreshore Estate and discussed how to take the inquiry forward.
Speaking to DT Next, ADGP Agarwal said, “We are commencing the inquiry as per the procedures and rules in place and it will continue. Whatever is required for the inquiry will be done even if the superintendent, who lodged a complaint against the IG, and the latter need to be summoned. It will all be part of the investigation.”
The officer maintained that she was not supposed to reveal if there is any prima-facie evidence for the allegations, and refrained from making any comment on the controversy surrounding the manner in which the committee has been formed.
In the compliant, the SP had alleged that the IG had tried to sexually assault her when she entered his chamber for official work on August 1.
The SP is currently on medical leave. She had lodged a complaint on August 3 citing the allegation. She reportedly met the State DGP with her complaint seeking action against the senior officer.
