    Disqualification case: Hearing adjourned to today

    Contrary to expectations that the hearing in the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs would end on Thursday, the matter has been adjourned for final hearing to August 31, after senior counsel Aryama Sundaram appearing for Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal sought more time to make his final submissions.

    The Supreme Court appointed third judge M Satyanarayanan on conceding to the submission granted the adjournment after making it clear that arguments ought to conclude on that day. The third judge had commenced his hearing on July 23 following a split verdict in the case.

    Earlier, senior counsel PS Raman appearing for the certain disqualified MLAs commenced his arguments based on how natural justice had been thwarted based on extraneous and perverse considerations. Also citing the Yeddyurappa case, he said the Chief Justice in her order had faltered on two places citing the number game, wherein in Yeddyurappa case the number game was crucial while in the 18 MLAs case, the ruling AIADMK could not have fallen even in the event of a floor test.

    Supreme Court lawyer Aryama Sundaram dwelt on the aspect that the MLAs meeting the Governor was not about what he can do. But, what the said MLAs wanted the Governor to do.
