In one case, three traffic police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were suspended for allegedly collecting Rs 200 from a motorist on Tuesday night. Police said sub-inspector Thennarasu, special SI Murugan and head constable Venkatachalam attached to Tiruvottiyur traffic enforcement police station stopped a two-wheeler and allegedly received Rs 200 as bribe.
A complaint regarding the incident was forwarded to the Additional Commissioner (Traffic) A Arun. “During internal enquiry, it was found that the charges were true,” sources said. Following this, the Additional Commissioner issued orders suspending the Thennarasu, Murugan and Venkatachalam.
In the other incident, the Traffic Commissioner suspended sub-inspector Iruthayaraj attached to Adyar traffic investigation wing for collecting Rs 2,000 bribe in an accident case.
In May, the Greater Chennai Police had rolled out the cashless system to pay fines for traffic violations. The new system was envisaged to curtail bribery and the higher officers had warned the personnel of severe action if they accepted money from motorists.
This is the third incident of traffic police personnel facing action on bribe charges after the cashless mode was introduced.
