Reporter’s diary: Fawning over all things Karunanidhi

The state Congress is taking alliance politics to new heights. Be it fawning adoration for potential ally DMK’s late president M Karunanidhi or letting out invectives against the ruling AIADMK, an otherwise reticent state Congress is holding no bars in pleasing the incumbent DMK leadership.

Tamil Nadu Congress president Su Thirunavukkarasar on Sunday said the incumbent AIAMDK regime would be toppled irrespective of the outcome of the court verdict in the MLAs disqualification case.

“Whether the court upholds the disqualification of MLAs or strikes it down, there is a chance of the incumbent government led by Edappadi K Palaniswami losing majority. There is a chance of the government falling after the verdict,” Thirunavukkarasar said, echoing the views of DMK leadership.

The same Thirunavukkarasar had announced a bronze statue for Karunanidhi at his expense. Only a week ago, an AICC member from Pattukottai wrote to the PM, seeking a commemorative stamp for Karunanidhi, a request even the DMK has not made public so far.

It requires little political wisdom to understand Congress’s newfound love for DMK. Critics and insiders in both parties admit that the state Congress unit has gone overboard, understandably, to keep its potential ally for 2019 in good humour, more so when speculation was rife that the BJP was not averse to warming up to a fence-sitting DMK.
