‘Awareness of schemes for women lacking’
Awareness on properly utilising the many schemes aimed at empowering women in the State continue to remain lacking, said speakers at the International Symposium for Women Empowerment organised by the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) and Madras University on Monday.

Though the government has been giving Rs 12,000 for institutional deliveries, “we have found that a large percentage of women use the amount to pay off loans or other debts”, said Dr Shaanthy Gunasingh, president, Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (OGSI).
Speaking during the event, Tamil Nadu Women Commission chairperson Dr KannagiPackianathan lauded the State for themeasures taken to prevent abortions, provide nutritional supplements to pregnant and lactating women, and supply of sanitary napkins.
“It will still take time for the state to completely shift from the age-old cloth to sanitary napkins. However, awareness programmes continue,” she said.
