On I-Day, ‘Sudhanthiran’ rescued from city drain
With Independence Day being celebrated with ardour across the nation, a 45-year-old woman in Chennai found an abandoned newborn in a ditch in Valasaravakkam.

Residents of SVS Nagar in Valasaravakkam were in for a shock after they found a wailing infant inside a stormwater drain on Wednesday morning and alerted the police. When they reached the spot, one of the women in the locality, Geetha (45) pulled the child out with its umbilical cord intact. Police said that the baby could have been born the night before.
The infant was rushed to a nearby hospital for first-aid and then transferred to Government Hospital for Children, Egmore.
The Childline was also alerted. The baby has now been kept under observation. Meanwhile, doctors at the hospital have named the boy Sudhanthiran. Police, with the help of CCTV footage, are trying to find out who dumped the child, but no case has been registered so far. Meanwhile, a video of the incident went viral.
