The Division Bench, comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonia Prasad, which disposed of a PIL moved by Change India represented by its director A Narayanan. “In the above said circumstances we direct the Secretary, MED, to furnish the comments to MCI to take further necessary action, if not done earlier within a period of eight weeks. On receipt of comments from the Secretary, MED, the MCI is further directed to proceed in accordance with law,” it added.
The petitioner, on citing a newspaper report dated May 5, 2018 about the impersonation in vogue in the 22 medical colleges in the state, referred to the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) president Dr K Senthil Kumar, saying, “Every year, assistant and associate professors are posted as professors in these colleges for a day. They appear before the inspection committee and return to their regular posts a day after inspection.”
Also noting that as per the report, TNGDA had reportedly announced that, hence forth, government doctors, will launch a non-cooperation movement by boycotting upcoming inspections by MCI in government colleges, if DME forces Associate Professors to pose as professors for the day, the plea said, “Thus, the shocking fact that students pass out of medical colleges in Tamil Nadu without qualified professors to teach them has come out in the open now.”
