Surappa’s statement came against the backdrop of a RTI notification that 64 students were admitted to Anna University’s College of Engineering, Guindy, last year without following proper procedure.

Denying the allegations, Surappa, who was visibly upset, claimed that the information with regard to the admission list collected through RTI was not explained clearly.

“It (RTI) is based on the list given by the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA). There is no breakup in it and therefore, it was misunderstood,” the Vice Chancellor explained.

According to him some admissions were made through NRI and other quotas, which was not listed in the RTI document. “There are no late entrants,” he said.

Stating that measures were already initiated to take action against those involved in the malpractices, the Vice Chancellor said all the admissions to the engineering seats this year also done as per the norms.

“When I personally looked into all the documents related to the admissions, it was found that there are no irregularities,” he said.

Echoing similar views of Surappa, Higher Education Principal secretary Sunil Paliwal said that irregularities in the evaluation were reported in the March 2018 itself and action was already taken against those involved in the offence.

When asked why action was taken against former Anna University controller of examinations G V Uma in March, Sunil replied that everything came to limelight only couple of weeks back.

“It was not officially proved through evidences. However, now, action has been initiated against her,” he added.

Anna University sources further said that Surappa, who appointed the probe committee to investigate “marks-for-cash” scam, is every keen in taking stringent action against the persons involved in wrong doings.

A senior staff from Anna University said as the investigation committee, comprising senior staff, will be submitting its report very soon, Surappa is planning to make the report transparent to the public.

“In addition to this  the university is also planning to appoint a permanent monitoring committee this academic year to look into all the activities from admissions to conducting exams,” the staff said.
