75-year-old attacked during robbery bid, dies in hospital

The incident took place on Thursday morning when Hemachandra Reddy and Jayamma were alone at their home. Two men entered the house on the pretext of asking water to drink. When Jayamma went inside to take water, they followed her and threatened her at knifepoint to part with her jewels.

Hemachandra Reddy, who was in the other room, rushed to her rescue on hearing her cries. But the duo attacked the couple with the knife and fled the scene.

The couple was rushed to a private hospital in Kelambakkam, where Hemachandra Reddy died without responding to treatment. Jayamma continues to be under treatment.

Mamallapuram police, who had registered a robbery case, have altered it into a murder for gain case and have launched a hunt for the offenders.

Police are also going through the CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
