The bus stand is located on Kamarajar road in the ancient temple town. Hundreds of people visit the bus stand dai-ly to board buses to various places like Vellore, Bengaluru, Chittoor, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai, Tiruchy, Chengalpattu, Maduranthagam, Arakkonam and Tambaram.

According to official sources, around 660 SETC buses besides local buses pass through this important bus terminus every day.

However, the bus stand, constructed in an area spread over 4.5 acres, does not have proper bays to park the buses, nor does it have a sign board to guide passengers who come to board the bus.

The commuters claimed that they are left confused and don’t know where to board the bus due to these issues.

They also claimed that the terminus lacks proper lighting to guide passengers during night. Their plight is made worse due to the poor road condition, leading up to the bus stand. The situation becomes very difficult during the rainy season due to the water-logged road.

R Ramesh, a resident of Kancheepuram said, “The bus stand is often congested as it is not properly organised. There are no proper water and restroom facilities. Despite the huge area allocated for the bus stand, the lack of maintenance makes life difficult for commuters.”

When contacted Kancheepuram municipality commissioner A Sardar accepted that the bus stop was congested and not organised properly.

“However, the proposal for constructing a new bus stand in 10 acres of land at Keelkadithur in Kancheepuram and estimated to cost Rs 38 crore is in progress. The work in this regard will begin soon,” Sardar said.

As an interim measure, he said that the municipality will soon take necessary steps to provide good lighting and better roads at the bus stand functioning on Kamarajar road.
