KMC embarks on green mission, set to get back its cool campus

A few years ago, Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital (KMC) was an oasis of greenery in the city’s concrete jungle. But in the recent days, the government institute has turned into a chaos of brick and mortar with continuous minor construction work, causing many to worry about the institute losing that charm.

Officials claim remodelling of the existing structures is the only ongoing construction work

Stating that most of the work being carried out at the moment is minor remodelling of structures and wards, the dean, Dr K Vasanthamani told DT Next, “The major work part of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s project is yet to begin. That will begin by the end of this year. However, it is the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) work that has disrupted the green atmosphere of the hospital on the outside.”

She said that even though many might fear that the hospital is losing its greenery, the truth is the exact opposite. “For every occasion, we plant a minimum of 10 to 15 trees. The campus is greener now as compared to a few years ago. However, as compared to the past, the greenery is not easily visible from the outside due to the metro station that has come up right outside the campus.”

Even though the CMRL work on the hospital’s side is complete, work on the college campus side is still on. “The whole stretch outside the hospital and the college campus is completely occupied by the CMRL. Once the work is complete, we will replant the trees on the roadside to ensure that the entrance to the campus is also green,” he stated. While the work was to be completed by the end of last month, the officials have sought the permission of the hospital authorities to carry on the work for two more months. “Our college students are eager to get back the greenery on the roads which were taken away as soon as the work began around two years ago. KMC has always been environmentally friendly and will continue to lay importance to planting trees,” said a doctor at the hospital. “Inspite of all the construction work, we will ensure that the trees on the campus are not brought down.”
