DVAC arrests Kanchi surveyor on graft charge

The DVAC team arrested the surveyor, Shankar (48), when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from Ashok Raj, a resident of Nagalathumedu near Kancheepuram. 

Three years ago, Ashok had approached the local body to measure his property and issue a patta for the piece of land that was registered in the name of his grandmother.

As there was no response from the officials for a long time, Ashok decided to meet them. When he met Shankar in this  regard on Thursday, the latter demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000. 

Ashok was asked to pay an initial amount of Rs 2,000 for measuring the land and was asked to pay the remaining Rs 8,000 at the time of receiving the documents. 

Ashok alerted the DVAC and as directed by the officials he went to the municipality and handed over Rs 2,000 to Shankar on Friday afternoon. The DVAC sleuths, who were following the events unfold from a distance, surrounded the surveyor soon after he accepted the bribe. The  accused official has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
