Class 12 student caught selling ganja commits suicide after pic goes viral
A Class 12 student from Kancheepuram who was among five others allegedly caught distributing ganja to other school students two days ago, committed suicide at his residence on Friday. Police said that he resorted to the extreme step after his photograph became viral on social media.

The deceased, 17-year-old Ramesh (name changed) from Vithedu, was studying at a government higher secondary school in Kancheepuram.
On Wednesday, Ramesh and four other students were caught red-handed by a group of parents while they were reportedly distributing ganja to the students of Iyankarkulam government higher secondary school outside the school compound. Soon, all the five of them were taken to Kancheepuram Thaluk police station.
Police also sent the samples to the lab for testing and later let them off the same night after a stern warning.
Despite being let off by the police, Ramesh was visibly dejected and stopped speaking to his family members at home. “Upon inquiry, we found that he did not even attend school on Thursday after the boys’ photographs and the news spread on social media,” an officer said.
On Friday morning, Ramesh’s parents found him hanging from a rope on the ceiling of the living room. Upon receiving information, the Kancheepuram taluk police arrived at the spot and sent the body for post-mortem at the Kancheepuram government hospital.
SC sensed repurcussions of victims’ pictures going viral in media
The suicide of the Kancheepuram boy on Friday is a proof of the serious repurcussions that can occur if pictures of accused are made public as anticipated by the Supreme Court. The top court, in its Wednesday order, had restrained the media from showing, even in morphed form, images of the alleged victims of rape and sexual assault at a shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district. The apex court ban in which the media was also asked not to interview the victims came on a day when a state-wide bandh was called by the Left parties in Bihar condemning the alleged sex abuse at the shelter home run by a state government-funded NGO. Expressing concern over the victims being subjected to media interviews, a bench of Justices MB Lokur and Deepak Gupta ordered the ban after taking cognizance of the letter received from one Ranvijay Kumar from Patna regarding the shocking incident.
