The state government had passed an order to revise half-yearly property tax – not more than 100 per cent for commercial buildings and not more than 50 per cent for rented residential and owned residential buildings. In Chennai, the revision comes after 20 years.

Following this order, the Greater Chennai Corporation is all set to review the taxation criteria in the area under its jurisdiction. All property owners have been asked to file a self-declaration form.

As per the government orders released on July 19 and July 26, the City Corporation increased the taxes not more than 100 per cent for commercial and rented residential buildings, and not more than 50 per cent for residential buildings. The order also stated that the Chennai Corporation, other corporations, municipalities and panchayats should implement the order from the half-year period of 2018.

As the Corporation is set to review the taxes within the limit of the civic body, all property owners are requested to file the self-declaration form, which is available online on the Corporation’s website and also at ward offices and zonal offices. The form will collect details of the property, including built-up area, total extent of land, portions which are given out on rent and other information.

The form has to be submitted by August 8, by either uploading it on the Corporation’s website or submitting it at the counters set up in Corporation’s zonal or ward offices. If the property owners fail to submit this form, evaluation of their property will be carried out by officials recognised by the Corporation Commissioner and the form will be subsequently filled.
